I just whipped up some toothpaste using bentonite clay, Tulsi, grapefruit seed extract, myrhh extract, baking soda, living water, probiotics, himalayan pink sea salt, coconut oil and fennel essential oil blend.  Yummy!

Why natural toothpaste? Most commercial brands contain Fluoride, a toxic chemical that has not actually been shown to reduce tooth decay, and certainly not at the rate that a diet low in phytic acid can. Fluoride also has been linked to thyroid damage and hosts of other problems.

Like most commercial health and beauty products on the market, toothpaste has been industrialized over the years. Here are just a few of the questionable ingredients commonly found in commercial toothpastes:

The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It ThereFluoride. While fluoride is supposedly the ingredient that prevents cavities, it doesn't do that job very well and can actually be very toxic to the body. In fact, if you suffer from acne outbreaks around the mouth and chin area, fluoride toothpaste may be the cause! (If you haven’t already, check out The Case Against Fluorideand The Fluoride Deception for more information.) Fluoride-free toothpastes are becoming more common, but unfortunately it’s not the only ingredient in toothpaste you should be avoiding.

Titanium dioxide. There are some concerns that titanium dioxide is carcinogenic.  The biggest problem is that nano-sized particles of titanium dioxide can be absorbed through the mouth and may cause toxic damage in the cells of the body.

Glycerin. (man made). This is found in almost every toothpaste on the market (even the natural ones). Glycerin helps give toothpaste its pasty texture and keeps it from drying out. But it can also leave a coating on your teeth that prevents them from remineralizing.

Sodium lauryl sulfate. It gives you the foamy cleaning action we all expect from toothpaste, but sodium lauryl sulfate is also a strong chemical surfactant that doesn’t belong in our bodies.

Artificial sweeteners. I don’t know about you, but I generally avoid chemical sweeteners like sorbitol and saccharin. Unfortunately, these are commonly used in commercial toothpaste to make them taste sweet.

It's beauty time again. You know what that means? Let's head to our kitchen we'll be raiding our tea shelf today.

Did you know that the antioxidants in tea can be highly beneficial to your skin especially the delicate skin around the eyes? Tea tightens the skin while the caffeine is highly effective in reducing the dark circles and puffiness. Try this at home eye treatment to improve your appearance and dump the appearance of tired looking eyes, or black circles.

DIY Tea Bags Eye Treatment
Take two organic green tea bags and place them in warm almost boiled water, let them steep for about 5 minutes.

Wrap them in plastic wrap, glad wrap or place them in a freezer bag.  Leave them in the fridge for about a half hour or the freezer for about 15 minutes.  When you’re ready to use them the bags should still be slightly damp and room temperature or cooler. If they dried out in the fridge just run them under tap water for a few minutes. Then just place one tea bag over each eye, lay back, and leave them there for 20 minutes. The tannins and caffeine will get to work, and ten minutes later you’ll look and feel refreshed. Amazing!

Do you have any other beauty tips involving tea? I know green tea can be used as a toner for your face (bonus points if you add apple cider vinegar). Anything else I should know about?

Mint is one of those workhorses of the garden. Once you plant it, your hardest job is keeping it from overtaking everything else in the yard and figuring out what to do with it all. Did you know Mint is one of the oldest and most popular herbs that is grown around the world. There are many different varieties of mint, each having its own subtle flavour and aroma.

Mint as Minta Spacata is a plant that has been long used in diverse cultures, such as India, the Caribbean and even Spanish speaking countries. Mint has a sweet flavour, with a cooling after-sensation. Both, fresh and dried mint are used in preparing a large number of recipes, including curries, soups, chutneys, salads, juices, and ice creams.

Its health benefits include:
- Soothing the digestive tract and if you are having stomach ache then it can be of great help
- Drinking herbal mint tea reduces irritated bowel syndromes, cleanses the stomach and also clear up skin disorders such as acne.
- Mint acts as a cooling sensation to the skin and helps in dealing with skin irritations.
- Mint helps in eliminating toxins from the body.
- Crushed mint leaves helps in whitening teeth and combat bad breath.
- Mint is a very good cleanser for the blood.

Here's a very simple tutorial on how to make mint extract at home

Ingredients:

approximately 1 cup mint leaves
2 cups vodka

Directions:

Sanitize jar
Harvest mint, ensure leaves are cleaned.
Either with your hands on with a mortar and pestle, bruise the mint. Tear the leaves a little.
Store the mixture in a cool, dry place for 1 month. Give it a good shake every few days.
After 1 month, strain the leaves, pour the extract into an air-tight jar and store in a cool, dark place.
The spearmint extract should last at least 1 year, if not more.

I'm a devoted incense user, I burn incense for everything imaginable; to practice yoga, to meditate, to unwind, to encourage emotional release, to deepen spirituality, to get inspired, to nurturing a sense of self...as I said everything. Incense is like a portal for me to deepen my attention spiritually. I use it to uplift the spirit, heighten the senses, and bring peace and harmony to my mind. We all have aromas that resonate with us on some powerful level. For me, it’s NagChampa. Over the years I've found sandalwood, Vertiver and Jasmine to elicit powerful emotions. Certain aromas inspire my writing so I tend to burn those while putting pen to paper (or really finger to keyboard) :) Ultimately life is about feeling good, connecting with oneself, and finding a sacred moment in this busy world to simply be.

But did you know, burning most sticks of incense has similar effects to smoking a cigarette?  An when I'm doing my yoga practice or daily meditation, or just being me, I don’t want to be breathing toxic fumes, artificial fragrances, and yucky junk. It is said burning those chemical laden incense on a regular basis doubles your risk of upper respiratory cancer, including throat, mouth and squamous cell lung cancer. So about a year ago, while pregnant, I started working along with Mukesh, an actual incense maker originally from India but lives in Lahaina, Hawaii for the past 25 years. He and I met on one of my past Hawaiian trips and have stayed friends since then. This was his first visit to Trinidad and on it, he decided he would teach me the art of crafting incense sticks. Not those yucky types found at stores, but the genuine ones. Non-toxic, hand rolled ones that are used in Indian temples. So yes, I'm making incense.. still learning because it is quite an art but making all the same for my home use.

Namaste!

It’s no secret that these days we do a LOT of washing. It's also no secret that manufacturers of laundry products spend a great deal of money to convince you that their products contain “magical” ingredients that can solve your laundry problem. However, typical laundry detergents are leaving more on your clothes than a “fresh” scent, which is not the case with a homemade laundry detergent.

Have you ever wondered why common laundry detergent brands don’t disclose questionable ingredients on the product labels? Or, why such products often bear warning labels like “danger”, “caution”, “corrosive”, “extremely flammable”, “strong sensitizer”, or even “poison”? That’s because their cleaning powers are stemming from strong allergens such as linear alkyl sodium sulfonates (LAS), sodium hypochlorite, EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate), phenols, carcinogenic petrochemical solvent such as 1,4-dioxane, optical brighteners of unknown origin and artificial fragrances linked to various toxic effects on marine life, as well as allergic reactions in humans.

You might think that in the modern age we live in, it seems a bit obsolete to be talking about homemade laundry detergent. However, healthy laundry practices are  imperative when you have children and pregnant women in the house or family members suffering from allergies, respiratory problems, endocrine problems or cancer.

Here's a homemade laundry soap recipe.

It’s actually pretty easy and inexpensive to whip up a homemade laundry detergent, and doing so not only keeps toxic chemicals out of your home, but also helps you reduce the amount of plastic trash you generate and minimize waste water contamination. They don’t have any magical ingredients that you can’t pronounce. Instead, the cleaning power of these soaps comes from combining clean and pure ingredients that are long known to be safe, such as: NoKa'Oi soap, baking soda, laundry soda, borax, and essential oils.

Recipe;

Borax
Washing Soda (not baking soda)
NoKa'Oi Bar Soap
Cheese Grader
bucket

First thing, you’re gonna take your bar of NoKa'Oi soap & your cheese grader & just grade it down. Use the side you would as if grading cheese to make a pie. When you’re done grading, this is what you get.

Next, it's time to add equal parts baking soda, washing soda and borax. Include a few drops of your favourite essential oil, mix well and store in suitable container. The end result looks like this

It’s recommended to use just 1 cup per load,
it makes NO SUDS but washes clean and cleans super!
and best of all it's made with natural ingredients and best for sensitive skin.

Now, we’re ready to do some laundry! Have a happy, sexy laundry day!

Was looking through some olden family heirloom and found this Wash Day instruction and thought I'd share it as it gave a great perspective on what the homemaker in the early 1900’s had to go through just to do a load of laundry! Now I understand the meaning of “Wash Day”. It took the whole day!

ADVICE TO A 1912 BRIDE

A grandmother gave a bride the following recipe for washing clothes (misspelled words and all) :

Bild fire in back yard to heet kettle of rainwater.
Set tubs so smoke won’t blow in eyes if wind is pert.
Shave one hole cake lie soap in boilin water.
Sort things, make three piles. 1 pile white. 1 pile cullord. 1 pile work britches and rags.
To make starch stur flour in cold water to smooth then thin down with boilin water.
Rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, then boil. Rub cullord but don’t boil — just rench and starch.
Take white things out of kettle with broom stick handle then rench, blew and starch.
Spred tee towels on grass.
Hang old rags on fence.
Pour rench water in flower bed.
Scrub porch with hot soapy water.
Turn tubs upside down.
Go put on cleen dress, smooth hair with side combs, brew cup of tee — set and rest a spell and count your blessins.

Do you think you could imagine your self doing all this today?

While over-the-counter drugs are the first things most people use along with a box of tissues during cold season, I on the other hand, reach for my spice rack along with herbal medicine or what we in the islands call "bush medicine". Cause, over the counter drugs often rid the body of its defenses against the infection, rather than treating the infection itself. I always marvel at over the counter medication advertisements, they tell you pop a pill to solve one problem but advises you that same pill can cause heart attack, stroke, blood clots along with a host of other problems. I often wonder what sense does it make to take medication for one problem while knowingly, putting yourself at risk for so many other possible problems. Fortunately, there are accepted spices a person can consume to alleviate many of the symptoms without the side effects of taking the drugs.

See the list below, its given for information purposes. Chat with your doctor before starting any home care treatment.

Anise: Aids in digestion and helps stop coughing.

Basil: Helps clear head congestion during a cold.

Black-pepper:   Provides Joint Pain relief

Cardamom: Can be used to provide relief from common cold.

Cilantro: Helps prevent food poisoning and removes mercury from the body. Cilantro is the name of the young green leaves of the coriander plant.

Fennel: Controls bad breath and, when chewed after spicy meals, masks the odor of garlic and onions.

Garlic: Can act as a decongestant and relieve common cold and has anti-bacterial antiviral, and antifungal properties

Ginger: Steeping ginger in nearly-boiling water to aid in breathing and even potentially ward offsinus infections.

Mint: Can help relive congestion caused by common cold

Onions: Have anti-inflammatory compounds that could help reduce the soreness and swelling of the larynx. Moreover, this bulb can also help in softening the phlegm, thus allowing you to cough and expel the mucus more easily.

Oregano: A favorite in Mediterranean cooking, oregano has powerful infection-fighting properties.

Peppermint: Stops intestinal gas, calms indigestion, controls nausea, and sweetens the breath.

Parsley: Promotes urinary flow and provides antioxidants.

Rosemary: A powerful antioxidant, rosemary also had microbe-fighting properties, and it helps calms nerves.

Sage: Treats the congestion and stuffiness associated with colds, clears headaches, and kills parasites, bacteria, and yeasts. Sage oil may improve memory.

Thyme: Well known as a natural antibiotic, it kills parasites and yeast. It can also soothe the chest and halt coughing.

Turmeric: The main ingredient in curry, turmeric adds zest and color to foods. It’s cancer fighting and lowers unfavorable bacteria in the gut that cause gas and bloating. It has anti-inflammatory properties.

Tulsi (Holy Basil): Provides relief from common cold and cough and has anti-inflammatory properties and can provide relief form pains and aches.

The common cold usually lasts for one week, although it may be extended for up to 2 weeks, it can be cured without treatment. If you notice that your cold lasts more than two weeks, then it is something serious and you should visit your doctor.
The most common symptoms of a cold are:
*Cough
*Congestion
*Diminished sense of taste and smell
*Fatigue
*Low Fever
*Runny or Blocked nose
*Sneezing
*Sore throat
*Watery eyes
Possible cold prevention techniquesTo reduce the chances of getting the cold virus you can follow these simple rules:
*Wash your hands regularly - and always before meals or before touching your eyes and your mouth.
*Disinfect surfaces including staircase handrails, door knobs, light switches.
*Try to avoid people that have the cold virus
*If you do get the cold always drink lots of fluid and get plenty rest.

The other catch up technique I had to accomplish was the block pour.
This technique had me smiling from ear to ear from start to finish. It was a great surprise seeing how it came together and filled the mold. Again, the soap could have done with waiting a few days before I had cut the bars but I was like a child on Christmas Eve night, I just couldn't wait to unmold and cut.

I love the color combination and the 3 rows of almost 'C' like patterns. Which resulted from how I cut my logs then bars. Next time I will cut them lengthwise just to see what pattern I end up with.

Happy soaping!

Testing..testing ..123...

I haven't tried new soaping techniques for quite a while so between re-branding work on Saturday and lots of paper work I decided to take a break and go play with some soap lol. I tested the funnel pour 1st and I have just finished cutting them into bars. The soap could have done with mellowing for 1 - 2 days again, but I was anxious to see the finished results.

Which I am quite happy with :) I used a different scent in every color and ended up with a yummy fruit salsa fragrance.

I used lots of soft oils to make these bars as I was worried if I would have had enough time to "play' with the soap. I realized you do need a bit of time but not too much especially since I worked rather quickly during the pour. I will be trying this method again this week but this time I will be using a much higher quantity of hard oils. All in all, I love this technique. I first saw it on Soap Queen blog and has since seen many soapmakers creating beautiful funnel pour soaps.

One great advantage with soap making is; its art! So, you could never really go wrong.. so give it go, it sure was fun for me.

❤DIY Hair care

Hair product buildup is the main culprit for lifeless locks. Here is how I bring back the natural gloss of  my hair with this simple citrus hair mask. Use a blender to mix the juice of half an orange and half a lemon, add 1 tbs of olive oil and 2 tbs of green tea leaves and 2 tbs cocoa butter (Theobroma Cacao).

Apply the paste on your hair strands. Start massaging your scalp in a circular motion. Leave the treatment on for 15 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water.

Why the chosen ingredients?

Lemons - are good for your hair, as it helps in removing dandruff. Rubbing or massaging lemon juice on your hair regulates the blood in your head helping in hair growth. The glands are regulated too which help in producing oil to have a beautiful and shiny hair

Orange – gives you a shiny, full head of hair.

Olive Oil - nourishes, conditions, and improves the strength and elasticity of your hair.
Green tea - maintains hair follicles and promotes hair growth.

Cocoa Butter - Many of you are already familiar with the health benefits of green tea, and you may have noticed that it’s showing up in a growing number of hair and skin-care products. You might not be familiar with the fact that cocoa has more flavanoids, which means you are gaining a huge antioxidant boost from cacao-imbued products. In fact, chocolate may well be the best available source of flavanoid to use as a dietary ingredient, so just think of what that could do for your hair and skin.

This is my hair after the treatment....

I know a lot of people who absolutely refuse to DIY (Do It Yourself). They don’t have the time, there’s too much cleanup, it’s too complicated. While all statements can be true about DIY beauty, there are plenty of recipes that take no time at all, aren’t messy and are easy to make. Not to mention the fact that there is something incredibly satisfying about whipping up your own body scrub or massage oils at home. Plus its healthy!
Here I am, getting ready to do a DIY facial treatment. (and I really needed it too, the past week my daily planner was packed to capacity, every hour on the hour I had something planned to get done) .

To get DIY beauty right, there are a few things you should consider;
1. To obtain maximum benefit from a facial application it needs to be applied to a freshly cleansed face; left on for 10-20 minutes; as you gently remove the mask the top layer of dead skin cells (which cause our complexions to look dull) is whisked away, exposing younger, healthier skin. Leaving your face with a brighter looking complexion. regular facial masks can also help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Take the time to enjoy the process; relax and even if for only a few brief moments escape the stress of the day. Let everyone in house know that you will be unavailable for at least 30-40 minutes.

Now for the recipe;

Rose & Aloe Vera Facial Mask.
This mask is good for all skin types, especially sensitive skin.

1 1/2 teaspoons French green clay
1/2 teaspoon Bentonite clay
5 teaspoons aloe vera gel
3 teaspoons pure distilled rosewater
1 drop rose essential oil

Mix the French green clay and bentonite clay together. In a seperate bowl mix the aloe and rosewater together. Add the aloe/rosewater mixture slowly to the clay mixture stirring until all the lumps are gone. Then add the rose essential oil and blend together.
Apply the mask to your face and neck (avoiding the eye area) and leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing clean.

Why the chosen ingredients?

Aloe Vera - Is very gentle on dry and cracked skin, and helps keep it soft and smooth, whilst seeming to provide some very effective anti-aging properties. Aloe Vera has shown that it can be very effective in slowing down the signs of aging by providing the body with vital antioxidants.

Roses/Rose water - rose water makes an excellent toner. Rose water has anti-inflammatory properties. Rose water thus, helps cleaning up the clogged pores, of oil and dirt, which are the basic reason for acne and pimples. The cleansing property of rose water leads to a healthy skin.
Bentonite Clay - This clay is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays used to treat both internal and external maladies.
French green clay - its toning action stimulates the skin by bringing fresh blood to damaged skin cells, revitalizing the complexion, and tightening pores.

I forgot to take a pic of me with the mask on but here is one of me a few hours after using the mask. Result: positively glowing skin!

When It struck me a few days ago that I eat way to much flour, I do not purchase those commercially processed bread at the supermarket, I make my own, some with flax seed and bran others with wheat and bran, pumpkin, oats, raisin and more. Now I am not one of those deathly thin vegan I am a lush vegan as I believe in eating healthy and wise. I ended up doing some research on white flour, wheat flour and bread and the startling results may shock you.

Well, bread is essentially glue and seasonings…with some refined, processed, fractured
foods and honey if you’re lucky. Bread once eaten, moves extremely slow through the body because it has no fiber unlike fresh fruits and veggies. Here are some fun facts I found out about bread.

1. Primitive tribal societies that have no bread exhibit a low occurrence of cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and osteoporosis.
2. Bread has been proven to be addictive. Subjects deprived of bread end up freaking out…me being one of them.
3. Bread is often a “gateway” food item, leading the user to “harder” items such as butter, jelly, peanut butter and even cold cuts. I know I know..sounds funny…but this is true! These foods are actually not foods at all. Why are we conditioned to think these items should even be on our shopping list and taking up valuable space in our kitchens?
4. Bread has been proven to absorb water. Since the human body is more than 90 percent water, it follows that eating bread could lead to your body being taken over by this absorptive food product, turning you into a soggy, gooey bread-pudding person. Ever notice that people usually resemble the food they eat the most? eeewww
5. You are what you ate.
6. Bread is baked at temperatures as high as 400 degrees Fahrenheit! That kind of heat can kill all your enzymes and nutrition right there
7. Bread is a filler and a cheap way to fill one’s belly when hungry. Bread is not nutritious!

Did you know that the inclusion of hydrogenated oils, artificial preservatives, emulsifiers, additives and other chemicals in bread became standard practice in the mid 1950’s?

At this same time whole wheat flour was replaced by bleached, enriched white flour. In this process, grain is bleached and sterilized with chemicals to make it white and soft.

It is then artificially “enriched” by adding vitamins, minerals and other materials destroyed in the chemical process.

Despite what you may have been told, trying to “enrich” something with the very vitamins and minerals that were removed from it in the first place, does not make it even half as healthy as the natural unrefined version.

When you think about this, it doesn’t even make much sense.

Your White Flour Isn’t Just White Flour

It is also a growing practice in many bread producing factories to replace white flour with substances like alum, ground rice, and whiting.

Alum is the most commonly used of all these substances, because it gives the bread a whiter color and causes the flour to absorb and retain a larger amount of water than it would otherwise hold.

This enables the factories to produce bread which imitates bread made from a higher quality flour.

This tainting of your bread with harmful, cancer causing chemicals such as potassium bromate, emulsifiers (both commonly used in bread production), and alum jeopardizes your health.

Do you know why your store bought bread has such a long shelf life?

The mysteriously prolonged shelf life is because of a particular emulsifier used in making the bread. This emulsifier is mainly used as a softening agent and tends to deceive buyers as to the real age of their bread.

This emulsifier can hide the signs that your bread is rotting (it certainly doesn’t stop the rotting) for a few extra weeks, but the harm it does to your body (and the harm in eating the half rotten bread) makes the cost for this “convenience” very high.

Is it any wonder then, that every year a growing number of people just like you and I, are being hospitalized with illnesses and incurable diseases?

So what can we replace flour with you maybe asking? How Can You Survive? According to mango chef: Make you own living bread!

Her recipe follows.

Veggies:1 small red bell pepper julienned
½ cucumber sliced
thinsproutsbutter leaf lettuce or red leafred onion
sliced thinRoma tomato slices
1 avocado sliced thin

Optional:
4 mushrooms sliced thin (marinated 10 minutes in 1 c water)
2 Tb braggs aminos.

Spread: Stone ground mustard
raw hummus or Nut-cheeze

Almond bread recipe:
3 1/3 c almonds ground in food processor 1c flax meal
1/2c olive oil
4 c zucchinis roughly chopped
3 red apples, cored and roughly chopped
3T lemon juice
3t salt
I tbs chopped shallots
¼ c dry herbs
¼ c water added slowly

Grind almonds in food processor, set aside. Combine all ingredients except for the flax meal and almonds and process into a dough.Kneed all ingredients together, spread on 2 teflex sheets and dehydrate overnight.Flip bread the next morning, dry for 2 more hours, then store in a glass container or wrapped in plastic until ready to use. This bread will keep nicely in your fridge for 10 days as long as you keep it wrapped and cold!

Furoshiki (or sarong) is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth that has been used since the Nara period to decoratively wrap clothes, food and other goods either as gifts or simply for transportation.

They make great reusable eco-friendly shopping bags and can of course express your ‘uniqueness’ through the choice of fabric, colour and pattern. With just a few simple knots, a 30 inch square piece of cloth can be tied to carry your worldly possessions – you could probably even wrap it around last seasons It-bag.

Instructions
Lay sarong on a clean, flat surface. Fold the sarong in half.
Tie the two edges of the sarong on the left together in a small knot, leaving some of the fabric out at the ends. then repeat the procedure with the two sarong edges on the right, remembering to leave the edge out.

Pick up the sarong by the ends that are not tied together and pull out (this should be by the triangle peak to the front) and place the two previously knotted ends together and push towards the center of the fabric.making a belly towards the base. Knot the tops ends together and  put your arm through the opening under the two knots and fluff out the bag so the sides are evenly out. Use as a regular bag. Skin cleansing have been performed for centuries using herbs, saunas and sweat lodges. The theory behind skin cleanses is that toxic substances are often deposited in the fatty tissues below the surface of the skin. This is especially the case if the other organs of elimination (e.g., colon, kidneys, lungs) are not capable of processing and eliminating these substances. If the skin is not efficiently eliminating wastes, there will accumulate a backlog of toxic substances and wastes in the body. This can put extra strain on the liver to process these substances. In addition, some of the substances that were deposited in the fatty tissue re-enter the bloodstream and cause additional health problems over time. In order to eliminate the backlog of wastes and toxic substances and improve the skin's efficiency in eliminating these wastes, a skin cleanse should be performed. I have seen and heard of many cases where the more powerful forms of skin cleanses have significantly improved the condition of persons with severe allergies and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.
A good skin cleanse will improve your complexion and restore a vital organ in your body to health.Listed below are a few suggestions.

Skin Brushing
This is a technique, used in many Asian spas, to eliminate toxins by stimulating the lymphatic system. The idea is that firm but gentle brush strokes across the skin will improve your blood circulation, clean out clogged pores and enable your body to remove toxins faster.
First you need to buy a brush. It should have natural bristles and a long handle. Secondly, make sure your skin is dry. Many people do a skin brushing in the morning just before their shower, so that the dead cells are immediately washed away.
Start the skin brushing with the soles of your feet, using slow, gentle, circular movements. Move up your body, all the time brushing towards your chest, but be careful to avoid areas where your skin is particularly sensitive.

Sauna
If you've ever been to Sweden then you know that some cultures regularly use saunas to detoxify, cleanse and lose weight. If you don't have your own sauna, then going to your local spa is a great way to find one. Saunas actually work better after exercise, because when you sweat your pores open up.
A good sauna will increase blood circulation and dislodge chemicals that are stuck to your fat cells. Make sure that the sauna has not been treated with toxic chemicals.
Be careful to drink lots of water and ensure that your mineral levels are high enough.
Stay in the sauna from 15-45 minutes, and make sure that the sauna is not too hot. If you find yourself sweating heavily after only 15 minutes, then you should turn the temperature down.
Diet
You can't do an effective skin cleanse without changes to your diet. The most important advice is to drink more water. You should be drinking at least 8-12 glasses of water a day to flush out the toxins from your body.
As for food, make sure that you are getting all the vitamins and minerals that you need. Using some of the recipes from our juice cleansing page will help, and vitamin supplements are also a good idea.

Hot and Cold Shower
A great way to improve your blood circulation and immune system is with contrast showers.
Improved circulation brings nutrients to damaged skin cells and carries away waste products, while contrast showers can also increase the number of your white blood cells and boost your immune system.
Start with 3 minutes of hot water, followed by less than a minute of cold water. Repeat this cycle at least once. A good time to do a contrast shower is straight after the gym, perhaps before or after using the sauna.

Skin ProductsWithout even realizing it, we pollute our body with toxic beauty products. Creams and potions are absorbed into our skin and scalp, but some of these harmful chemicals in our beauty regimes could also be causing skin problems such as acne, eczema and rashes. Switch to reputable natural organic products such as to natural soaps, skin creams, shampoos, conditioners and shower gels.

Ocean/Sauna Skin Cleanse
This is a simple skin cleanse which can be done if you have access to a sauna near ocean (salt) water. You will need the approval of your healthcare practitioner to use the sauna and you need to be careful that the ocean water is not too cold. The steps are as follows:
1. Swim/stand in ocean water for 5-10 minutes.
2. Sit in the sauna until you have worked up a good sweat (approximately 10-15 minutes).
3. Swim/stand in ocean water for 5-10 minutes.
4. Rinse off the ocean water with fresh water. You can perform this cleanse several times a week
if you are finding it helpful.
