It may seem like a subtle distinction, but the worlds of motivation and inspiration are millions of miles apart.

A lot of people use the words “motivated” and “inspired” interchangeably. But I've found something different to be the case. When one tries to motivate themselves, nine times out of ten they're  pushing themselves to do something they don’t really care about. Motivation is about psyching yourself up. Chest-pounding. Fire-walking. Heavy-metal riffs. You get the point.

Inspiration comes from a completely different place. The word inspiration means to be in spirit. When you’re tuned into your spirit, you are naturally drawn to do whatever feels best. You may do things that aren't outwardly productive. Or you may write a book in 30 days. Either way, it’s all good because fulfilment is the end result.

Motivation, on the other hand, usually has a lot to do with fake growth. You think you should be doing something because you see someone else doing it and it often leads in the direction of something you are not prepared for and wasn't inspired to do. It’s what you’re “supposed” to be doing. It’s just a good idea, not a passionate, burning desire that emanates from the core of your being.

So, motivation is about things that you think you should do or that you’re supposed to do. Inspiration is about being called to act because you’re in direct alignment with the magnetic, luminous marrow of potential that is you.

You might be thinking… “How do I get inspired?” Well, you can’t. Inspiration isn't something you get, it comes from within, it comes from your core.

So being inspired isn't about doing something external to bring something in. That’s motivation, remember?

Being inspired is about a constant process of realignment. Whenever you’re feeling like you have to push, it’s time to realign. Whenever you’re feeling like you’re not enjoying life, it’s time to realign. Whenever you feel like you’re moving forward only based on what someone else's is achieving, it’s time to realign.... then again, when this happens, how many really do have enough courage to say to themselves 'I'm moving forward, or 'I'm doing this because Leigh has done so'. 'After all, who does Leigh think she is. Right!'

The thing is realignment isn't anything complicated. It’s very simple, actually. All it involves is drawing inward and exploring what you really want. Your home cosmography, as Thoreau put it.

So, what do you really want? Not what should you want, not what you think you should want because someone else has it or what you think you might want or what is a good idea for you to want. WHAT DO YOU WANT? What do you want for your business, or life? What lights you up? Once you've got a grasp on that,.. go ahead, savour it. The time has come for YOU to find the true you and carry on cause this is the true me.

  1. Hi Leigh,

I loved your post and truthfully I never considered motivation to be different from inspiration, and what is more you've heard so many times "I need inspiration" that it never occurred to me that inspiration is an inward thing.

I am at a stage in my life where exactly what you are asking, what do you really want? is plaguing me, because I have no ideas or I have too many ideas, which is scary, because I don't want to leave this world without leaving a legacy for my myself and for my children.

So what or how do you think is a good place to start?

    Thanks.

    1. Thank you for comment 'Anonymous', :)
You have what is termed 'Too Many Ideas Syndrome' sounds apt right lol.

But most everyone at some time in their life actually go through this, so you're not alone. But making a decision quickly is imperative otherwise you would soon lack focus (if you are not already) which would leave you rather frustrated. If your answer to the question “What kind of business are you going to start?” is something like “I’m not sure yet. I have a few different ideas…” stop immediately and pick one.

Make a list and evaluate the pros and cons of all of your ideas taking into account:sales flow, cash, profit, product design, time to design it, competitors, channels, etc... etc... Make a quick draft analysis, don`t waste your time going in depth.

Then...pick 3 from your list. These 3 will usually be the best 3 according to your business evaluation. Then pick one.

The winner idea, will usually be the one which you feel or think you have strong knowledge, experience, references, money to invest on it... or you JUST FEEL VERY EXCITED to work on it. Then, focus on it.

All the best and I hope my suggestion helps and I hope to see your business idea posted in this blog pretty soon. :) Namaste!
