If we have a good heart, we experience much happiness and relaxation. We have no reason to feel angry or jealous and we have a very happy mind. When we speak, sweet words come out. Even our face is happy and smiling. At night we go to bed with a happy mind and have a very comfortable sleep, without any worries.

98 year old Dobri Dobrev, (pictured) a man who lost his hearing during World War II, walks 10 kilometers from his Bulgarian village in his homemade clothes and leather shoes to the city of Sofia, where he spends the day begging for money. Although he is well known around several of the city’s churches, for his prostrations of thanks to all donors, it was only recently discovered that he has donated every penny he has collected — over 40,000 Euros — towards the restoration of decaying Bulgarian monasteries and churches and the utility bills of orphanages. He is modestly living off his monthly state pension of 80 Euros.

"Some of us have long asked why we cannot hold on to happiness. For all of the scholarship and human insights across centuries, nobody has found a complete and enduring answer. Perhaps because it has been too close to see…The answer, the key, is our heart."

My deepest belief is that there is greatness inside all of us. And to access it, we must align ourselves with a greater purpose, commit to excellence, and seek to improve every day.

I have actually seen these selling in Trinidad, at Trincity Mall, tried them on and was very tempted to purchase but opted out last minute.

YES! I would actually love to give this a try. Designed after a local 'sling shot' I must say a pretty cool idea. The only question would be if the extended wooden parts at the top would feel un-comfortable against the side of your feet.  I doubt. What do you think?

“When I meet people in different parts of the world, I am always reminded that we are all basically alike:

We are all human beings. Maybe we have different clothes, our skin is of a different colour, or we speak different languages. That is on the surface. But basically, we are the same human beings. Human beings by nature want happiness and do not want suffering.

With that feeling everyone tries to achieve happiness and tries to get rid of suffering, and everyone has the basic right to do this. In this way, all here are the same, whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, Easterner or Westerner, believer or non-believer, and within believers whether Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and so on. Basically, from the viewpoint of real human value we are all the same.

Human happiness and human satisfaction must ultimately come from within oneself. It is wrong to expect some final satisfaction to come from money or from a computer.

How can we eliminate the deepest source of all unsatisfactory experience? Only by cultivating certain qualities within our mindstream. Unless we possess high spiritual qualifications, there is no doubt that the events life throws upon us will give rise to frustration, emotional turmoil, and other distorted states of consciousness. These imperfect states of mind in turn give rise to imperfect activities, and the seeds of suffering are ever planted in a steady flow. On the other hand, when the mind can dwell in the wisdom that knows the ultimate mode of being, one is able to destroy the deepest root of distortion, negative karma and sorrow.” -Dalai Lama

Noni is a fascinating plant, demanding of our respect.  Its prolific beauty, bearing fruit year round...as if to say, "here I am, please use me." However, as you may already be aware, few of us are willing to make Noni's intimate acquaintance. The aroma of Noni fruit is truly bad. Some say "disgusting" or "horrid" or "stinks bad" or worse. And, it doesn't taste good either! Yet, it is well-known to be one of the main healers among the traditional Polynesian medicinal plants. It is said that this Noni is to be used when we are feeling really ill or really old.

The Noni fruit should be picked from wild tress called "Ovin" at its yellow stage.  This is the critical picking period and very important as set down through generations from Tahitian Medicine Men.  The correct time to pick the Noni is when it turns 100% yellow - this is called "Omoto." The fruit is then washed and placed to dry for five days to a week or more, until the fruit turns to mush.  This fruit is then placed in drums and allowed to macerate (naturally pressed) for approximately 4 weeks into juice .  It is these juices that are strained and filtered for use.  This is the traditional method that allows the natural extraction of Noni Juice with all of the Noni fruits natural enzymes.

It is said the liquid 'supports your immune system, delivers superior antioxidants, increases energy, and allows greater physical performance levels.'

The recipe is a very simple one, combine all ingredients in vita mix and blend well.

1/2 cup Noni Juice
1 Young Coconut water and jelly
4 tablespoons virgin coconut oil
Agave Nectar to sweeten (if desired)

❤ Raw Glow

I love raw soups! They are truly the comfort food of the raw world for me! Even on a cleanse you can still make raw soups with just a few modifications. If your recipe calls for cashews or other nuts or nut milk you would leave out the nuts and swap the nut milk for water or coconut water.

My lunch today;
8 oz. frozen raspberries (if you dont want to eat cold let raspberries thaw then blend)
1 large banana
2 medium oranges
3 large ribs of celery
1/2 cup cashews
Agave nectar to sweeten a bit.
Blend all ingredients to desired smoothness.

Garnish with Okra rings, flowers and herb or your choice.

Namaste!

Find the balance that’s right for you.

Do you sometimes wonder whether your life is in balance? It is easy to know if you lead a balanced life because if you do then:

- you enjoy every moment and every second,
- you can cope with any difficulties,
- you can be happy without any reason to be happy,
- you can be yourself and love the person you are.

Today the world constantly tries to throw you out of balance, point in case; It sometimes is very unnerving realizing that some local small business owners, as we'll call them, actually sit and scan the way I market my business on facebook and see no wrong with copying my marketing tactics and strategies. If I can borrow Mike's quote  but adapt it to me ' everyone wants to be like Leigh'.  What ever happened to following your OWN path? Creating your OWN strategies? Then I remind myself, that it's pretty simple... they do not know how to believe in their own-self. Giving your dreams the wings to fly is something that's very difficult for alot of people to do yet alone understand. Thankfully, through my spiritual lifestyle I have learnt to cope with such difficulties by simply living a balanced lifestyle.
“There is no secret to balance. You just have to feel the waves.” – Frank Herbert

To start, what does it mean to be balanced?

To me, it means that you have a handle on the the various elements in your life and don’t feel that your heart or mind are being pulled too hard in any direction. More often than not, you feel calm, grounded, clear-headed, and motivated. Balanced living might seem like one of those theoretical terms that nobody can put into practice but in fact there is nothing simpler than living a balanced life.

It might take some work at first but once you get in the flow and discover the simple ways to steer your life in your desired direction you will feel empowered. You will be inspired and energized by every day of your life. Your life will be full of amazing adventures and events that will make every day memorable. You won’t be wasting your life any more or spending gloomy hours contemplating about the misfortunes that might have happened on your way.

Does balanced living mean that your life will be full of only positive people and events that will bring you happiness every moment of your life? Not at all.

Balanced living is when you can always offset any negative events in your life with positive ones. It is also when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Balanced living is when you are happy working and playing equally. If you picture happiness and everything great in your life as a diamond, then any negative things that may happen are just the setting that makes this diamond shine only brighter.

Finding balance is one of life's great goals, but it can be as elusive as it is desirable. Change your approach and its true nature will emerge.

Myth: A balanced person is good at everything.
Truth: Balance requires prioritizing.

I recently realized this  "superwoman syndrome" I had, where the idea that I should be able to fill all needs, including my own, all the time started to get me out of sync. This is where the 80/20 rule came in. This established business principle posits that, by and large, roughly 80 percent of results come from 20 percent or fewer of the causes.

Think about what is most important for you to accomplish, and why. How can you make the most of your talent and energy in order to reach your goals? What is the benefit of focusing on these few things? Does it give you more time with your family, open up more opportunities, provide additional income? Weigh in with yourself about each action you want to take and why; that way you will be less likely to spread yourself too thin and sabotage your best efforts.

Don’t try to be anyone else. Make a conscious decision each day to just be you, and to make no apologies for that. Find comfort in the fact that it’s okay and even ideal to not fit into someone else’s idea of what’s right: the right work, the right work/life balance, the right feelings, the right way to live.

Focus your energy on determining what’s right for you. It can feel easy to simply go with the flow. But when you discover ways to live your life that fully align with what is in your heart, the reward of balance is unparalleled.

I end my post today with a quote by  Dr. Seuss that I always love..
“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
such simple words yet it means so much. Namaste!

I'm a devoted incense user, I burn incense for everything imaginable; to practice yoga, to meditate, to unwind, to encourage emotional release, to deepen spirituality, to get inspired, to nurturing a sense of self...as I said everything. Incense is like a portal for me to deepen my attention spiritually. I use it to uplift the spirit, heighten the senses, and bring peace and harmony to my mind. We all have aromas that resonate with us on some powerful level. For me, it’s NagChampa. Over the years I've found sandalwood, Vertiver and Jasmine to elicit powerful emotions. Certain aromas inspire my writing so I tend to burn those while putting pen to paper (or really finger to keyboard) :) Ultimately life is about feeling good, connecting with oneself, and finding a sacred moment in this busy world to simply be.

But did you know, burning most sticks of incense has similar effects to smoking a cigarette?  An when I'm doing my yoga practice or daily meditation, or just being me, I don’t want to be breathing toxic fumes, artificial fragrances, and yucky junk. It is said burning those chemical laden incense on a regular basis doubles your risk of upper respiratory cancer, including throat, mouth and squamous cell lung cancer. So about a year ago, while pregnant, I started working along with Mukesh, an actual incense maker originally from India but lives in Lahaina, Hawaii for the past 25 years. He and I met on one of my past Hawaiian trips and have stayed friends since then. This was his first visit to Trinidad and on it, he decided he would teach me the art of crafting incense sticks. Not those yucky types found at stores, but the genuine ones. Non-toxic, hand rolled ones that are used in Indian temples. So yes, I'm making incense.. still learning because it is quite an art but making all the same for my home use.

Namaste!

It’s official: I'm hooked on papayas!

Papayas have never been a fave fruit of mine until I started blending them.
Yes, I know they are is rich in enzymes called papain and chymopapain which helps with digestion, particularly it breaks down the proteins from the food we eat into amino acids. Even latest research shows that amino acids are responsible for all what is happening in our organism, basically for what is happening in every chemical reaction as well as our mental and physical health.

What's I find particularly amazing is all the parts of the papaya fruit are useful and beneficial. Right from the seeds to the papaya leaves and the flesh of the fruit, all of it has some value. Both the inside and the outside of the fruit can be utilized .Thus no part of the fruit is useless or goes as a waste.

Yet, all along I just ate papaya's cause I know they are god for you. Until, one day I decided to include it in a smoothie. Now, I just love it! It is great because along with savouring the taste you are also ingesting all the benefits associated with eating the fruit, which will result in good health for you ! Did you know papaya even works magic on strengthening the immune system preventing the recurrent colds and flu?

So anyway, the recipe;
Green Papaya Smoothie

2 handfuls of fresh spinach
2 cups frozen papaya
2 ripe Julie mangoes, sliced.
1 frozen apple
3 dates
2 Tbsp chia seeds, ground.
1 tablespoon of fresh papaya seeds
3 cups living water (or young coconut water and meat)
1 tsp coconut oil (optional)

Method: Wash and blend all ingredients. Place in a bowl and add items below.

Smoothie dressing;
I used organic sweet peppers, sliced.
Sprouted beans
Celery leaves
Vervain flowers.

Happy Raw Eating!

After posting a photo of my morning breakfast, last Tuesday on facebook, I was socked by the interest it drew. I had over 22 persons 'liking' the photo and some even commented asking for recipes. And those that know me personally, know I just love taking about a health inspired lifestyle. Plus, I've been meaning to start posting recipes here for so long now and just never started. So with a roll of the drum.... let's go!

Green smoothies are just the thing if you need something more filling, like a snack or a light-ish breakfast. Or if you need to get yourself some fibre — because all the ingredients are blended, you still get all the fibre from the fruits and vegetables. And blended fibre is easier to digest.
How to make a super green smoothie
You can make smoothies as heavy or as light as you like — depending on your energy and hunger needs. My mom usually makes her smoothies so thick that she literally eats it like a chilled soup, with a spoon out of a bowl or cup! I prefer to drink mine, though.
now for the fun part..the recipe.

Smoothie base:
1 banana
2 large handful Pak Choi
1 handful Spinach 2 tbsp walnuts or nuts of your choice
1 stick celery
1 gala apple
1 bosc pear
2 tbsp cashew nut butter
2 tsp goji seeds
2 cups coconut water
1tbsp virgin coconut oil

Blend all ingredients in high-powered blender until smooth. You can drink like this or add extras to make your meal more substantial. Here, I added

2 ripe bananas cut in half
Diced, ripe Julie mango and
Thawed berries.

It’s no secret that these days we do a LOT of washing. It's also no secret that manufacturers of laundry products spend a great deal of money to convince you that their products contain “magical” ingredients that can solve your laundry problem. However, typical laundry detergents are leaving more on your clothes than a “fresh” scent, which is not the case with a homemade laundry detergent.

Have you ever wondered why common laundry detergent brands don’t disclose questionable ingredients on the product labels? Or, why such products often bear warning labels like “danger”, “caution”, “corrosive”, “extremely flammable”, “strong sensitizer”, or even “poison”? That’s because their cleaning powers are stemming from strong allergens such as linear alkyl sodium sulfonates (LAS), sodium hypochlorite, EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate), phenols, carcinogenic petrochemical solvent such as 1,4-dioxane, optical brighteners of unknown origin and artificial fragrances linked to various toxic effects on marine life, as well as allergic reactions in humans.

You might think that in the modern age we live in, it seems a bit obsolete to be talking about homemade laundry detergent. However, healthy laundry practices are  imperative when you have children and pregnant women in the house or family members suffering from allergies, respiratory problems, endocrine problems or cancer.

Here's a homemade laundry soap recipe.

It’s actually pretty easy and inexpensive to whip up a homemade laundry detergent, and doing so not only keeps toxic chemicals out of your home, but also helps you reduce the amount of plastic trash you generate and minimize waste water contamination. They don’t have any magical ingredients that you can’t pronounce. Instead, the cleaning power of these soaps comes from combining clean and pure ingredients that are long known to be safe, such as: NoKa'Oi soap, baking soda, laundry soda, borax, and essential oils.

Recipe;

Borax
Washing Soda (not baking soda)
NoKa'Oi Bar Soap
Cheese Grader
bucket

First thing, you’re gonna take your bar of NoKa'Oi soap & your cheese grader & just grade it down. Use the side you would as if grading cheese to make a pie. When you’re done grading, this is what you get.

Next, it's time to add equal parts baking soda, washing soda and borax. Include a few drops of your favourite essential oil, mix well and store in suitable container. The end result looks like this

It’s recommended to use just 1 cup per load,
it makes NO SUDS but washes clean and cleans super!
and best of all it's made with natural ingredients and best for sensitive skin.

Now, we’re ready to do some laundry! Have a happy, sexy laundry day!

Was looking through some olden family heirloom and found this Wash Day instruction and thought I'd share it as it gave a great perspective on what the homemaker in the early 1900’s had to go through just to do a load of laundry! Now I understand the meaning of “Wash Day”. It took the whole day!

ADVICE TO A 1912 BRIDE

A grandmother gave a bride the following recipe for washing clothes (misspelled words and all) :

Bild fire in back yard to heet kettle of rainwater.
Set tubs so smoke won’t blow in eyes if wind is pert.
Shave one hole cake lie soap in boilin water.
Sort things, make three piles. 1 pile white. 1 pile cullord. 1 pile work britches and rags.
To make starch stur flour in cold water to smooth then thin down with boilin water.
Rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, then boil. Rub cullord but don’t boil — just rench and starch.
Take white things out of kettle with broom stick handle then rench, blew and starch.
Spred tee towels on grass.
Hang old rags on fence.
Pour rench water in flower bed.
Scrub porch with hot soapy water.
Turn tubs upside down.
Go put on cleen dress, smooth hair with side combs, brew cup of tee — set and rest a spell and count your blessins.

Do you think you could imagine your self doing all this today?

I came across an article on Vice written by Joanna Fuertes-Knight and aptly called GIRL EATS FOOD - HIPPIE JOHNNY'S CHOCOLATE BROWNIES. It's about making weed butter and using the butter to make brownies. Yes, weed as in ganja, bud or cannabis :) I can just imagine your faces now. Lol!

Much to my delight, I found this article very pleasing. Read it here. As Joanna rightfully said eating 'weed brownies doesn't give you lung cancer' cause weed is much better then popping a chemical filled cigarette between the kisser. Chemicals? What! Don't tell me you thought cigarettes are simply dried tobacco leaves rolled in paper, then you’re about 597 ingredients off. The tobacco industry has become master mixologists with the additives. Some ingredients are added for flavor, but research has shown that the key purpose of using additives is to improve tobacco’s potency resulting in increased addictiveness–and the additives they choose to use are dreadful. Don't believe me? Read the list of 599 additives approved by the US Government for use in the manufacture of cigarettes here.

So how do one cook with ganja?

  • Locals, please keep in mind Ganja isn't legal in Trinidad and Tobago. Anyone found with ganja on their possession, or home will be jailed.

  • The recipe attached to this article isn't RAW but I'm sure a RAW version can be wonderfully made. I'm thinking Raw cocoa, almond milk, nuts,Medjool dates with a pinch of startch and sea salt..  and ...hmm think I'm gonna create a recipe for RAW ganja brownie. :)

Cooking with Marijuana

Most weed-related recipes call for the making of "Ganja Butter", which is then used as a replacement for standard butter while cooking. To prepare ganja for eating it has to be heated in some way. It won't work if the weed is eaten without preparation, because the digestive system is unable to digest THC directly. When cooking with weed, it is very important to use fat (oil, butter, milk) because THC (the stuff that gets you stoned) is fat soluble and not water soluble. It is therefore impossible to get high from pot tea, for example, without adding some milk.

What are the effects?

It can take anywhere from 20 minutes to even up to 4-5 hours for the effects to set in. It all depends on your body. The biggest problem here is to find the right amount. When smoked, the effects set in almost immediately, so it is easy to judge how much you need. After eating some weed, some users are too impatient, and they think they need more. While it is not possible to overdose on weed, the effects of eating too much cannabis are not pleasant. You may feel sick, confused, unable to move or talk, and your coordination may be heavily affected. These effects may last a long time, much longer than when smoked. It is therefore important not to eat too much. Start with a low dose, and increase it the next time, if needed. Experiment to find the right amount. If you eat too much, a high dose of vitamin c (200mg or more) may help to make you feel better.

The length of time it takes for ganja to work, also depend on the amount and quality of the weed, the rate of your digestion system, and the amount of food you've eaten beforehand. For best results, we recommend not eating anything at least 2-3 hours before eating your marijuana.

How much weed do I use?

Trial and error is your guide here. If you're making ganja butter, you might go through a few saucepans full of cabbage before the butter is green and smelly enough to be useful for cooking. It's a good idea to note down how much you've used so you know for next time. As a general guide, a mild dose using high quality cannabis, extracted properly into butter or oil, would be 0.5g. To get really high use 1g. So - 7 brownies=7 grams of cannabis.

On to the juicy part!

Ingredients to make ganja butter

1 lb. of butter (not margarine!)
1/2 ounce of finely ground marijuana

Method;

Melt the butter in a sauce pan until it's simmering.
Add the marijuana and let simmer for 30 minutes or so until the butter has turned green from the marijuana.
Pour butter through a strainer to remove all the pieces of marijuana.
Chill until solid.

You can follow the recipe in Joanna's article from here on in, she has even provided a step by step photo log.  Bone-appetit!
